Lately, I have been thinking about how we view change. What makes us afraid of change? Can we think about change as the saying goes as “glass half full” or “glass half empty?” When I was the moderator of the “Embracing Change” panel for the Asian American Women’s Coalition, many of the women spoke about how they found that change – expected or unexpected –brought opportunities they least expected. It made me think about the many changes I have been through in my career: from teaching at a university, to being the executive director of a national organization, to training faculty about diversity, and ultimately founding my own consulting practice to provide leadership and career coaching/training. I would never have imagined having a career with all these jobs, but I found that when opportunities present themselves – you have a choice to embrace the opportunities to develop your skills, expand your network, and learn something new. It’s about growing and pivoting to expand your experience and not missing out on a career opportunity that can lead you to a new and exciting career direction.
